Somebody That I Used To Know Lyrics by Goyte

Song: Somebody I used to Know Lyrics

Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
I told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it’s an ache I still remember

You can get addicted to a certain kinda sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I’ll admit that I was glad that it was over

But you didn’t have to cut me off
Make it like it never happened and that we were nothing
I don’t even need your love, but you treat me like a stranger
And that feels so rough

No, you didn’t have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records
And then change your number
Guess that I don’t need that though
Now you’re just somebody that I used to know

Now you’re just somebody that I used to know
Now you’re just somebody that I used to know

Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believin it was always something that I’d done

But I don’t wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn’t catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know-oh-oh

But you didn’t have cut me off
Make it like it never happened and that we were nothing (oh)
I don’t even need your love, but you treat me like a stranger
and that feels so rough

(oh)

No, you didn’t have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect you records
And then change your number (oh)
Guess that I don’t need that though
Now you’re just somebody that I used to know

Somebody that I used to know
Somebody (now your just somebody that I used to know)
That I used to know
Somebody that I used to know
Somebody (somebody) (now your just somebody that I used to know)
That I used to know

I used to know
That I used to know
I used to know
Somebody

Song Meaning

Listen For Some Emotional Intake

For the very first time when you will read the lyrics or in fact listen to the song, you are bound to go emotional. Especially if you had a fight recently with your special someone, you will surely remember him or her. I cannot comment whether the words are beautiful or not but yes, their meaning truly is! The song is a talk between two lovers (Kimbra and Gotye) who are no more together.

The first line begins by saying; there was a time when we were very close. Gotye recalls the days they were together and admits of believing that Kimbra was the right one. However, just after admitting this, says, somewhere in my heart, there was a feeling of loneliness in spite being together. As lovers’ occasionally make promises, this couple also did, and Kimbra was so happy that he could have even died after Gotye came in his life.

Nevertheless, as time passed they realized that they were not made for each other and decided to break up. They take the mutual decision of parting ways and agree to remain friends even after break-up. Though no reasons have been specified to undertake such grave decision, it looks like a betrayal!

However, it’s not that easy to be a friend with someone you have loved more than your life (it’s a personal view). For this very reason, Kimbra cuts off so badly that it appears to a person that they are no more than strangers. Gotye cries hard that Kimbra should not have done this.

Kimbra behaved with Gotye as if nothing ever happened between them and this rough behavior of Kimbra hurt Gotye badly. Gotye says that it is not that love is demanded from Kimbra anymore but such bad behavior was never expected. He should not have been so low. Kimbra even changes the mobile number to cut off any further possibilities of communication.

As it was believed in earlier lines that Kimbra did it because it was not tolerable to live like friends, but at later stages it was told by Kimbra that he was fed up of the activities done by Gotye. He could not live a life that was based on a lie.

Finally that famous line, “Now you’re just somebody that I used to know.” Gotye after being fed up of the entire episode bravely accepted the fact that Kimbra was just a phase in his life that came and passed on. It is such a sad ending to a beautiful love story!
